NYC design gurus team up for summer workshopFri, Feb 22, 2008

This summer, $900 bucks will get you six days with famed NYC graphic designers Paul Sahre, James Victore, and Jan Wilker. The design workshop will happen from Monday July 21st through Saturday July 26th at the Art Director’s Club in NYC.

If you’re at least a bit plugged into the graphic design scene these three names should ring a bell. Each designer lectures, teaches college courses and workshops individually but this is the first time they’re doing it together. Seeing these three dramatically different personalities together should be interesting. Paul Sahre is known for his book jacket designs and posters for Soho Repertory Theatre. His work is strikingly simple and driven by concept. James Victore is a total badass and that shows in his work. Beyond attitude and strong opinions, James embraces the process and let’s it surface in everything he does. Jan Wilker brings that euro-flair to the table.

Those familiar with Photoshop layers should have an easy time figuring out the workshop’s website. Use the links on the left to toggle the content layers on and off. The idea is brilliant: three different personalities, three different treatments, coming together in one place. The site is informative but leaves me asking a few questions: Is this going to be a reoccurring thing or just a one-time event? There is no mention of what they plan to do in 6 days. Will it just be lecturing? Will they collaborate on one project? Will it be documented? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

The class size is capped at 40 people. And at $900 a head, that equals roughly $36,000. Minus a few insignificant expenses, and split three ways, all i can say is chaaaaaa-ching.

Found GlovesSat, Apr 15, 2006

Here’s a bunch of found gloves from this past winter that I photographed with my cellphone camera. When I was a kid my parents used to make me wear gloves that were connected by a string to keep them from getting lost. Seems like some adults haven’t outgrown that piece of innovation.

Bodies : The ExhibitionThu, Jan 19, 2006

This past Saturday I forked up 27 bucks to see dead people. No, really, I did. Bodies : The Exhibition is a show that’s currently on display at the South Street Seaport Exhibition Centre. It features the skinned bodies of 22 real cadavers as well as 260 individual organs. These bodies and organs have been plastinated—so don’t worry about getting bloody. Plastination is a technique used in anatomy to preserve flesh where water and fat are replaced with plastics, resulting in a speciman that won’t decay or smell. Awesome! If you can stomach this kind of intensity I suggest you go see this show. It’s an elegant synthesis of science and art that is both educational and entertaining. Make sure not to go before dinner and definetly don’t bring someone there on a first date—it won’t help you get laid.

Warning: The following images are not for vegetarians.

Mel Gibson is a WeirdoThu, Jan 12, 2006

Mel Gibson is a Weirdo

Mel Gibson returns with another dead language epic titled “Apocalypto”. The title as well as certain themes and imagery in the trailer lead me to believe that this movie will be about Mel Gibson’s interpretation of a so-called apocalypse. Most apocalyptic stories depict a terrifying, destructive end of the world, and others are more elegant, having to do with a shift in human consciousness or the coming of a New Age.

December 21, 2012 will mark the winter solstice and is also the end of the twelfth, final baktun in the long count of the ancient Mayan and Aztec calendar. This date is believed by many to signify the apocalypse. The end of this solar-planetary cycle will affect Earth and create some sort of change. Whether this change is the destruction of Earth, some sort of enlightenment of human consciousness or whatever, is up to you. Googling 2012 will produce some interesting results—there is indeed a growing culture around the year 2012 and what will happen once that time rolls around. Amongst the wild claims of Earth vanishing into thin air, or aliens landing and eating our brains, there is also a slew of scholarly research done on the topic. If you’re interested in this I suggest you read John Major Jenkin’s research on the Mayan calendar and 2012. I’m convinced that certain planets will align on December 21, 2012 but I’m not so sure about the effects it will have on Earth. The only thing we can really do at this point is just wait and see. Mel Gibson will definetly try to influence your expectations.

Rokkan Holiday PartyThu, Dec 15, 2005

It’s that time of the year when everyone and their mom is having a holiday party. Rokkan (Japanese for intuition) hosted one at their studio last night. The Rokkan space looked great—with sleek furniture, a glass-walled conference room, and an impressive full kitchen. Props to the interior architect. Great party, good people, and the bar-b-q was a pleasant surprise. :^]
